First of all if we’re talking about flus or colds or epidemics or pandemics or biological warfare, we need to get on the same page about where I’m coming from and where you’re coming from.

I’m not going to tell you to run out and get vaccinated because I don’t think that will help you. At all. In any way. Personal opinion. I’m also not going to tell you to go out and get the latest drug because I think you can do a lot more for yourself by taking other things that won’t cause brain hemorrhaging and heart attacks.

Now that you know that, you’ve either been quickly offended and I don’t have to worry about you anymore or you need some help and you’re willing to look in another direction than the medical mess.

Ok, SWINE FLU!!!! It’s the next big craze in the media frenzy. What was it, Avian Flu last time? And did you get it? Did anyone you know get it? Well, then its safe to say that it wasn’t really that big a deal where you live. However, if you’re all freaked out about Swine Flu, you’re afraid its going to get you, maybe I can give you some practical ideas about how to boost your health in a real way (Personally I don’t think that taking something that can cause internal bleeding or chronic sinus infections is something someone should ever consider a “health booster” perhaps an “eventual health destroyer” would be more accurate. And yes I am talking about medication.). Using tissues to turn doorknobs will only get you so far in the way of protecting your health.

When we’re talking about boosting immunity, we’re talking about improving your chances of NOT getting sick. What can you do? Well, sugar and high fructose corn syrup are immunity killers. When you consume sugar, you are putting a constant stress on all of your body systems because it does all kinds of bad things to you. One thing it does immediately is completely mess up the pH of the digestive tract.

That might not seem like a big deal to you, but if you’ve been paying attention to the natural health news lately, they’re always talking about pH. Well, now I’m going to. The pH of your digestive tract is a very important thing to the entire body. For one thing, it varies from organ to organ. The mouth, the stomach, the small intestine, and the large intestine all have different pH levels. The most acidic is the stomach. And this is where so much goes wrong.

If the pH of the stomach becomes too alkaline, you can’t break down the compounds in your food to make anything available for absorption in the small intestine. And that includes taking supplements. If you can’t break it down, you can’t absorb it. With its chemistry, the stomach can produce vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and everything essential for their absorption, out of the food you eat. One reason people don’t get anything out of their foods these days is because they eat boxed-up crap, but another reason is that their stomach acid isn’t what it needs to be.

Sugar will alkalinize your stomach. So will a host of drugs and synthetic supplements and antacids. Artificial sweeteners are NOT a better alternative. Would you rather catch a cold or get kidney stones? Just don’t eat that stuff. Eat honey, maple syrup, fruit, even the natural sweeteners like xylitol, stevia, erythritol, agave syrup, whatever you can get your hands on. Any of that is fine, it won’t hurt you the way sugar and artificial sweeteners will.

One of the most important substances that gets broken down in the stomach is calcium. It’s not difficult to get the amount of calcium you need from the correct foods (like leafy greens and raw milk products), but you have to have the right pH in the stomach to get it out.

One of the funniest things about stomach acid is indigestion. People think (because they’ve been told) that when you get indigestion or acid reflux it’s because you are producing too much stomach acid. Actually, the opposite is true. You aren’t producing enough stomach acid, so your food is sitting in your stomach and rotting and waiting for something to come along and break it down so it can move on. Well what do we do for that? We take an ANTI-acid pill. So any bit of acid that might’ve been produced by your obviously suffering stomach is made totally inactive. Statistically, a lot of people who take antacids or those acid-reflux drugs have a problem with bone-loss because their body can’t break down any usable calcium. Bet you didn’t know that.

I’m not telling you to suffer with indigestion though. Just get some HCL, or pepsin, or something like green papaya pills to stimulate your stomach acids. Ginger helps too.

Now, to get back on the subject of Swine Flu, Calcium is VERY important for immunity. Calcium is what allows the white blood cells to go where they need to go. It improves white blood cell motility and therefore greatly improves phagocytosis, the immune response action performed by white blood cells. However, you need to be taking the right kind of calcium if you’re not eating enough of the good things that contain it appropriately. “Calcium with D,” or whatever you’re taking from Wal-Mart, will not get you where you need to be to help your white blood cells with this. You need to take calcium lactate with magnesium citrate in a 5:1 ration of calcium lactate : magnesium citrate.

The immune system is not just some idea of a way your body works. It is actually a system of organs in your body just like the cardio-vascular system, or the musculo-skeletal system. The immune system (or the immune alliance) is comprised of the Thymus, the Spleen, the Long Bones (like your thigh bones or femurs), the Stomach, the Intestinal Flora, and the Liver. They all have different components that are utilized in helping your body with its immune response. To strengthen the immune system, you need to strengthen the whole body. You need to eat good foods to build your blood up so that when you need extra nutrients to help your body protect against foreign invaders, it won’t have to steal from the bones and other tissues. You need to give more so the body has more to work with.

It’s also important to digest your food well so that you don’t cause trouble for the flora (good bacteria) in the small intestine. The intestinal flora are essential to immunity because among their important actions, they keep bad bacteria at bay. However, if you are on, or have taken an antibiotic lately, you have severely upset the good/bad bacteria balance in your intestinal tract and you owe it to your intestines to correct that. You can take a probiotic to try to replace what you’ve murdered with the antibiotic, or you can try something to encourage the growth of good bacteria, like drinking raw milk. It will also greatly help your intestinal flora if you correct your stomach pH.

An immunization doesn’t give you tools to fight against disease. It gives you the disease in hopes that you will build an immunity to it. With the health of America’s society today, these shots become more and more dangerous as our body’s become more and more nutrient starved and have less and less to work with nutritionally. We have nothing to guard against the stress that immunization will put on us.

Another problem with immunizations is that they bypass your body’s natural defenses. Instead of allowing the virus a chance to be burnt up in the stomach, it is injected directly into the blood stream. In a healthy person the pH of the stomach would be so acidic, that the virus or parasite or bacteria or fungus would literally chemically burn up. With immunizations or vaccines, there is no warning as there would be if you had contracted it through the nose or eye. Instead it is presented as an immediate threat that the body has to deal with without having the natural protection of its preliminary defenses. Not only is it unfair to your body, it is dangerous. It is a risk I will personally, never take. I would rather have swine flu than the swine flu vaccine because I would know what to do if I became ill by my body’s warning signs. If my nose starts to run, I need more calcium lactate. If my glands get swollen I need something to deal with toxins. If I get a rash, my organs of elimination are taxed and I’ll need something for my liver or bowels. These are all things you should pay attention to and treat them like the blessings they are. But what do you do instead? You take Advil Cold and Sinus and you go get a steroid cream. The ignorance that has been forced on you about your own body is a crime and sin and you must reconsider your stance on health if you want to live well. If you want to take drugs and get by, that is your choice and I don’t judge you for it because I assume that’s all you know. But if you come to me, and you want my help, be ready to take responsibility for your self and for your health. You didn’t get swine flu because you didn’t have the shot. You got swine flu because your body didn’t have what it needed to fight and win. And that is ultimately, your fault!

So many people talk about the foods that you shouldn’t be eating. Certain diets eliminate or limit your intake of everyday things like breads, meats, fats. On the Atkins diet its carbs, if you’re a vegetarian or a vegan (though most would tell you that it’s a “life choice” not a diet), you don’t eat meat or animal products. For many reasons, people make the decision to change their diets. I have mixed feelings about changing one’s diet. I think too many people see a commercial and think they should call Jenny or order NutriSystem, or they start eating SmartOnes or Healthy Request or Lean Cuisine, and without making a truly well-informed, conscious decision, they just throw themselves into a diet thinking they’re saved; thinking that the program will do it for them. That they won’t have to do anything but just eat from a box and they’ll drop 30 pounds in no time.

Its people that take a different stance on diet that really make it. It’s a different idea. It’s not a goal of dropping 30 pounds in as short a time as possible. It’s not making sure you can fit into a dress or a bathing suit at the end of the month. Its making a choice to change your ideas about food, and it’s a choice that few people even realize the importance of. Because nowadays if you can add water and stick in the microwave, that’s a meal. And from the stand point of nutrition, if you’re planning to improve yourself with foods like this, it makes no sense at all.

Food is a sacred thing. It nourishes us. It gives us the building blocks that make our bodies. It’s a beautiful thing. If you’ve heard the term, ‘nature’s bounty,’ that is how I think of food. I live for summer time when I can go to the farmer’s markets instead of the grocery stores. I love to eat huge bowls of garden-fresh salad greens or take big bites out of a pepper or a tomato that I’ve just picked and eat it like an apple. There is nothing more blissful in life than eating something you’ve grown and knowing how good it is for you. This simple act satisfies something so basic and good inside a person, I find it incomparable to any other.

Yet, even though we live here in our beautiful mountains with most of us having more than enough land for a family garden, or having a relative that has land we could help with, we depend on Food Lion and County Pride for our fruits and vegetables. Even though we have orchards all around us and cattle that graze the land right down the road, we buy from the grocery store. Where does that food that our neighbors are raising go? Why aren’t we eating it? And why aren’t they selling it at the grocery stores instead of shipping it from God knows where? How much less money would we spend on eating the beef the Timbrooks or any number of other county families raise? As I drive down our road, I always see their cows and I watch them eating and I think, “I would much rather eat that cow than a stranger’s cow from 1,000 miles away. Why can’t I?” I know those cows eat well; I know they’re well taken care of, where can I get some?

I find it very strange and insidious that we don’t have publicly available what’s locally produced. Why aren’t Food Lion and County Pride buying from local farmers? It seems very underhanded to me. And it’s not very supportive of the community. And here, we should be very community-oriented. We don’t have any distractions of the big city to keep us from paying attention to what’s important in life. We have each other. And even though my family doesn’t go back generations upon generations here, I love where I live, I love our home and our land, and I respect the people who live here. I would rather live here than anywhere else I can think of. I don’t think you can top Hampshire County or West Virginia. I think people who move from here to the cities are crazy and I think people who lived in the cities and moved here must be divinely guided.

When it comes to guiding our patients on what to eat, I often use the line “Eat like your grandparents ate.” For most people that means good wholesome home-cooked meals free from chemicals, additives, preservatives and all other kinds of bad-food-juju. Eat things that will help to build the body up and not tear it down. Eat foods that are real and not fake. Eat fresh, flavorful produce. Eat real butter. Eat real meat. Eat deer, eat red-meat, eat chicken, eat fish. Eat the tomatoes you canned. Eat the relish your neighbor gave you that she made herself this summer. Eat apples from the tree. Eat berries you can pick. And if you can’t get those things, and you think you can only shop at the grocery store, READ THE LABELS! For God’s sake. Know what you are putting in your body! Is there something on there you can’t pronounce? It’s probably a good idea to look for something else. Is there an ingredient that has words in the name you remember from chemistry class? Again, it’s probably best to look elsewhere.

It’s true that most packaged foods have inedible ingredients that should be avoided if you’re focusing on improving your health through your diet. It’s not a conspiracy, it’s not a joke. It’s a cold reality. Most things people eat are killing them. If you’re eating foods that have a lovely chemical slurry added to the mix, you’re not helping yourself in anyway by ingesting that. And even though your loaf of bread has a couple synthetic vitamins that were sprayed back into the flour after processing it (like thiamine mononitrate or dicalcium phosphate) the micronutrients that make those vitamins available to the body by completing their complex, were removed in processing. See? What’s going on with this stuff!

The following list shows the names of the most important things to avoid when reading labels, which you must do if you buy food at the grocery store and wish to help yourself.

• High Fructose Corn Syrup
• MSG, or Mono Sodium Glutamate
• Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils and Fats
• Sodium Nitrate/Nitrite/Erythorbate
• Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal)
• Sucralose (Splenda)
• Saccharin (Sweet-N-Low)
• Acesulfame – Potassium [Acesulfame – K] (Sunette, Sweet One)

If you’re chewing gum, you’re getting a straight-shot of Aspartame and Acesulfame-K.

I was raised in a non-medical household. What that means (for people who might not quite grasp that) is this:
• I’ve never been to a medical doctor.
• I’ve never taken any medication either prescription or over-the-counter.
• I’ve never been to the hospital except to have an x-ray.
• If I get sick, I won’t go pay someone to tell me I’m sick and then get some prescription that will make that someone a lot of money that I will have to pay just so that prescription can make me sicker down the road. I don’t do that, no one in my family does that, it’s how we were raised, and to us, its blatant and vulgar high-way robbery.
You could say we’re very prejudiced against the medical monstrosity that is the “norm” today, and you would be correct.

Interesting things happen to me and in my life I’ve come to realize that the universe has quite a sense of irony. A prime example is my boyfriend, Mike. As I’ve just explained to you about my background, perhaps you’ll be able to see the humor in the fact that Mike is the son of a now-retired OB/GYN. Of all the men in the world, I had to fall for the son of a medical doctor! My family thought it was just hilarious.

Needless to say, Mike was raised in a very medically-oriented household. Yet, even though we come from opposite sides of the coin, we have the same ideals and the same basic beliefs which makes a lot of things very easy. However, because of his background, I have to teach him a LOT. He was raised knowing only the AMA/FDA side of things and never had to look outside the box. Till he met me.

I’ve opened his eyes.

We were sitting at the table having dinner a few weeks ago and we started talking about food, and Mike asked me a very good question. “What’s the worst of the worst as far as the crap they put in food.”

Well, I had to think about it for a little while, and after weighing the list of cons of additives like MSG or Aspartame against the list of cons of additives like Hydrogenated Oil, I finally decided on High Fructose Corn Syrup. Now, after what I found out today while doing research for this blog, I am sticking to that deduction. High Fructose Corn Syrup is the worst of the worst.

So let’s get into this because everyone, always, wants to know why. Why is the all important when you’re trying to educate instead of indoctrinate.

I can already hear you out there with your media-based argument that will go something like, “But I just saw a commercial on TV talking about how High Fructose Corn Syrup is all-natural and it’s made from corn and it has the same sweeteners that sugar has!” Before you accept the TV’s word as gospel about HFCS, take a moment for your health’s sake and read the rebuttal.

{I’d just like to take a moment and appreciate the art of being vague. Because that is how the people who make these claims about High Fructose Corn Syrup get away with it.}

{I’d also like to take a moment to appreciate the art of media-control. Without which, the American people would not be who they are today. You can use it, or abuse it, and big business abuses it to the fullest extent it can.}

“High Fructose Corn Syrup is ‘all-natural.’”
Well, corn is natural. That’s about where it ends. The process by which we beget HFCS (I’m going to abbreviate from now on, I hope you’ll understand) is anything but natural.

Suffice it to say that corn is subjected to enzymatic chemical breakdowns until it is changed into something that neither tastes like or looks like corn. Few things are of much use to the body when they’ve been so removed from their natural state that they can no longer be recognized

“High Fructose Corn Syrup has the same natural-sweeteners as table sugar.”
This is where I applaud the CRA’s (Corn Refiners Association) use of vagueness. Yes, HFCS has both fructose and glucose which are present in white sugar from sugar beets and sugar cane. What they’re not telling you is that because it is a man-made ratio of glucose to fructose it is fundamentally imbalanced; the body can’t use it. In fruit the ratio of glucose to fructose is 50/50, equal parts in a sucrose molecule. However, in high fructose corn syrup the ratio can be as off as 20% glucose to 80% fructose and that leaves a huge amount of unbound fructose in your body. Not only does this tax the liver (but hey, what doesn’t tax the liver these days?), it can cause high cholesterol, blood clots, and a decrease in white blood cells. HFCS robs the body of essential trace minerals like copper, magnesium and chromium. It can cause sugar to show up in the urine, it can cause a lot of trouble with the pancreas (HELLO DIABETICS!!!). As anyone with any basic science knowledge understands, you can have hydrogen atoms in a substance along with a few other elements and you’d have the life-giving substance of water, OR you can have hydrogen atoms in a substance with a few other different elements and you’d have a life-destroying bomb.

Maybe that’s a little dramatic as an analogy for something like the difference between sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup. But when you look at it from a health stand-point, you may find it’s not so inappropriate.

Believing what the Corn Refiners Association says about High Fructose Corn Syrup is like believing the drug studies funded by the American Medical Association. Do you really think they would ever publish a study that would challenge or disprove their gospel? For the Truth you have to look at other studies that are privately funded. In most of those cases no one is being paid to say a lie is the truth.

I would like to say that I eat a diet that is free of high fructose corn syrup. It’s not expensive and it’s not difficult. It’s not gourmet or fancy. All you have to do is read labels and be willing to choose another food to replace what has HFCS in it. I have complaints from parents all the time that their children, their sick children, their ADD diagnosed children, their children wit allergies, their children with asthma “like that food and want it.” Well if you would like to have a healthy child who can behave, wouldn’t it be worth it to just feed them better? Wouldn’t it be worth not having to take them to the doctor every month or buying prescription medications for a CHILD or buying an inhaler for them, if their health could be changed just be feeding them?

Please people, pay attention to what goes into your children’s mouths! Why do you let them have that gum? It makes them happy, sure, but how unhappy will they be when they have kidney stones from the aspartame? They like Kool-Aid, ok, but do you know that food dyes can cause ADD and ADHD all on their own?

If you don’t believe me, for argument’s sake, torture them and take that crap out of their diet. Just one thing. Just the food dyes or just the aspartame or just the high fructose corn syrup, and see what happens. Just see what happens. And not for one day or one week. Try it for one month – 30 days of hell on earth without Doritos – and see what happens.

Awesome. As if it weren’t enough that its sugary-sweet poison, now its sugary-sweet poison WITH MERCURY!

Nutrition Response Testing has helped me so much personally and also my family, we have had so many benefits from this program, I wish everyone could experience it. There is a new book out about Nutrition Response Testing: The Great Health Heist by, Paul J. Rosen, J.D., L.AC.
This is a wonderful book. It’s full of truths you would never find out in normal circumstances. This is a book with information you have to seek to find. These are things that EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW but its being suppressed by the AMA, FDA, and USDA. Not to mention their financial backers. Your health (or lack of!) is bought and paid for, and your options are decided for you. You need to take your health into your own hands and out of the doctors’. It’s your body, and regardless of what you’ve been told and made to think, you still make the decisions.
I hope you all will buy this book. I can give you snippets of information on the blog and help you find places to learn more, but ultimately, it’s up to you to take control of your health. If you want real information, I’ll help you find it. I don’t have time to sit down with everyone and discuss what’s going on in the healthcare / food business today. I try to give you a start, and these blogs will help more, but I encourage you to do your own research. Seek to find the truth. I’m really happy to be doing this blog. The main components of this first one are from an old newsletter we put out a couple years ago. But the information is still valid and the websites are active. The Big ‘C’

Caffeine is the “drug of choice” for 90% of Americans. How does it affect the body? According to cancer researcher, Dr. Bruce Ames, coffee is the Number 2 cause of cancer today.
Coffee is a mind-altering stimulant that produces a surge of nervous energy, only to leave its victims exhausted, irritable, short-tempered, depressed, and nutritionally depleted. Caffeine is converted into uric acid helping to turn the body into an “acid bag” (low pH level), which is the cause of painful gout, arthritis, and other joint and muscle pains.
It stimulates the brain cortex, which can cause poor balance, racing heart, poor memory, fatigue, hand tremors, anxiety, hostility, headaches, dehydration, and many other disorders. Although butter has been given a bad rap by the AMA and FDA, recent research shows that grandma was right all along. Virtually all ingredients in butter deliver remarkable health benefits.
Butter from free-range (grass-fed) cows contains CLA (conjugated linolenic acid) which protects from cancer and heart disease and assists in reducing excess fat and building lean muscle. Other ingredients found in butter help to normalize cholesterol levels. Also found in butter is the anti-arthritis & anti-stiffness Wulzen factor, named after its discoverer, Dutch researcher Dr. Rosalind Wulzen. Another crucial ingredient is what Dr. Price called the “Activator X” which enhances the absorption of vitamins.
Butter contains saturated fat, which is needed for energy, hormone production, the absorption of certain nutrients, and many other important biological functions. Butter has anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-tumor properties. Recent non-AMA/FDA research indicates that at least 50% of our dietary fat should be saturated. Coconut oil is saturated, and considered to be one of the healthiest fats. Polynesian islanders who depend heavily on coconut oil are among the healthiest people on Earth.
Butter was doing all right for centuries until the mad food scientists and their financial backers with big dollar signs in their eyes got into the game. After massive brain washing of the American public, Margarine sales went through the roof, as did arteriosclerosis, heart disease, and heart attacks. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed what can happen if people think they know better than Mother Nature. When the population in some areas of India switched from their traditional Ghee (clarified butter) to margarine and refined, polyunsaturated vegetable oils, their heart disease rate increased up to 1,500%. A Harvard study monitored the diet of 8,500 women. After a period of eight years they compared the diets of those women who developed heart disease with the diet of those who did not, and found a definite link between trans-fats from margarine and heart disease.
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had invested their money in margarine put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white, tasteless substance with no food appeal so they added butter coloring and flavoring.
Hydrogenation generates trans-fats, but gives margarine a very long shelf-life. Margarine increases the bad LDL cholesterol and lowers the good HDL cholesterol, increases the risk of cancer up to five fold, decreases immune and insulin response and lowers the quality of breast milk. And here is another part that is very disturbing: Margarine is only one molecule away from being plastic. Let a tub of margarine sit uncovered in your garage. Within a few days you will notice a couple of things. No flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it. It does not rot or get smelly because it has no nutritional value. Nothing will grow on it because it’s almost plastic.
Folks, its time to move ahead to the past. Join the unhooked generation and toss your margarine or any of its infamous, ‘designer spread’ cousins. Hydrogenated fats like margarine are toxic and should be avoided at any cost.
Although regular pasteurized super market butter beats margarine hands down, the best butter is of course raw and organic from free-range cows. Raw milk contains heat-sensitive nutrients like folic acid and vitamins B6 C, as well as enzymes and beneficial bacteria that are killed in the pasteurization process.
